What bothers me even more is that so many of them get completely memory-holed and people continue to see them as a viable source of information. Then they wonder why public trust in the media continues to plummet.

This is the major utility of the constant news cycle. It exists to perpetuate a general sentiment to anyone plugged in. They can't remember any details, but they remember the emotions.
