Yep, much like punk-rock it started as an anti-authoritarian way to express cultural angst. By the late 80s/early 90s the commercialization was already taking over, and then it became trendy, now it's become mainstream. Very similar to the skater counter-culture in the 80s that blossomed into full-on pro-corporatism in the 90s with the X-Games, which was ironic because all the imagery and music was supposed to be themed around anti-corporate/anti-authoritarian messaging.
