Same reason why people gift and donate so much to big Twitch streamers.
It's a heavily exploitable aspect of human psychology most prevalent in midwits. With the death of normal relationships, a move away from in person socialization, and a marked decrease in traditional mortality, you can now plainly see the outcomes in the "new relationships" that people form.
The big secret is that it was never kids with their parent's credit card paying for endless WoW mounts, OnlyFans access, or a FunkoPop collection. It's generally age 25-40 men in half decent careers.
Real life intimacy is nigh-on impossible for these folk. Any girlfriend you get they're worried, and rightly so, that they'll be cheated on. And most will. Friends? What friends? Friends outside of middle or high school are inordinately difficult to make, especially after moving for a job. Why would they try to make friends with the guy in the next cubicle over when they might be enemies competing for a minor raise, or even worse, they might have a non-PC opinion and that makes an already awful life potentially even more difficult!
I would also like to add that society discourages friendship through social activities such as a local bar. Whereas years ago it was rather expected you would go to a local establishment every night because that was where people would meet and discuss the events of the day/week.
Now if you are a regular drinker you are made to be seen as an outsider because of regulations and such.
Also, this isn't even an alcohol thing. Years back this was a coffee house thing because it was simply a meeting point for people to discuss ideas. Which at the end of the day is always bad for the powers that be.
