From what I've seen personally, they aren't self aware enough to realize any of that. The majority of the REALLY crazy leftists are mentally ill or nhililistic enough to either not care and just wanna fuck shit up until they get offed or not be aware of the possibility of them being put against the wall.
You only expressed half the idea. Here's the other half:
"and they won't fear for their safety until they start to get hurt or killed."
This thought should make most people uncomfortable, but, since we tolerated what they did up to this point, the problem was allowed to fester and get worse, so now the solution is equally as severe.
Many of these cops don't agree with this but do it anyway. Another group of cops agree with it, but won't risk their lives to enforce it. There isn't any risk so both groups keep imposing their leaders wills. Once there is a threat all this will stop. I agree this could have been averted, but we are near a critical point in history right now and not enough people realize it.
I've been saying this for a year now. Until those enforcing the tyrannical orders fear for their safety, things will continue to get worse.
That's likely what they want since they can use it as an excuse to go full on NKVD and Stasi
