Yeah, but the thing is the Left never believed in Civil Liberties. Just how the Communists claimed to oppose Racism, oppose the Patriarchy, oppose inequality, support Free Speech, support Sexual Liberation, and support Drug legalization... all while actively killing anyone who supported those things in Communist countries.
The Leftists always wear Liberalism as a skin suit for their initial subversion. Once in a position of power, they act as illiberal as they can because they are diametrically opposed to Liberalism.
This is why I constantly harp on rejecting this "liberal-conservative" dynamic. The Left seized the term Liberal for themselves and no one understands the distinction and that they are illiberal. By granting them the title "Liberal" you immediately cede ground in an argument that they are seeking to free people from some sort of ordering; but they aren't. That's why they form lynch mobs at the drop of a hat against anyone who violates their order. There is nothing Liberal about them, and there never has been. It's a single tactic for their larger totalitarian strategy.
I was left back then, I think lots of us did care about civil liberties, and some lefties still do today, but their overall abandoning of them was what caused me to reconsider which parties stood for freedom, and which were the quasi bush sequel admins. I think youre points are good that 'liberalism' is not held by the left, not now, and not fully before, either.
