If $16 were ones only option for obtaining money to stay alive, they would be foolish to not suck it up and do that until they got on their feet.
I worked for that kind of money back when I was a kid. And it was how I survived to start my businesses.
The average rent for a studio apartment in X is $1,720.
4 weeks of 40 hours would net you $2560, and taxes would presumably be stolen out of that. For a person not living with their parents, it would be difficult to sustain themselves on such a low wage.
I realize it's easy to look back and be all "back in my day..." but when I made $12/hr (which was a good rate for a soft young man at the time, though not quite construction money) I shared a room with a friend. Between 7 friends and I we rented a 4BR house.
I am genuinely sympathetic to the current generation, however. That house probably rents for 7 or 8 grand a month now, and wages haven't gone up that much.
Yup, average apartment rent now is a thousand dollars more than I used to pay for a 4000 square foot house. Despite the ancient age of the "things are going to hell!" meme, it really does seem like we're in vertical spike territory.
