A beholder is the stuff of nightmare. Unfortunately they are removing the evil from monsters, BG3 has a good mindflayer just to subvert expectations.
Now DnD always had this tent of questioning evil in villains or making deals with devils or even beholders but they were always evil, now they want the monsters to be average people, average leftists since a beholder is probably considered less of a monster then a white guy.
A "good" brain eating sun-hating Lovecraft-inspired abomination. Let me guess, he only eats the brains of people who voted for Gnomald Brump?
He only eats the brains of generic bad guys or something stupid like that.
So the flayer's murders are acceptable because he doesn't care about his victim's life and motivations, and that makes him good.
