Videogames are actually an amazing indicator of where things are going. Most fans like new technology and how to use it. So they often get into things before anyone else.
Want 3D? The only people with experience in 3D real time physics was military simulators. Need the guy to move fluidly? That's a medical tech no one really knows what to do with. So making Mortal Kombat 4 meant using people from those industries so the game looked good. Literally the guys who made that game went on to help with Gollum in the Lord of the Rings and other stuff.
Meanwhile, fans were figuring out how to emulate or port games to their PCs. They created download programs and info checkers so someone could continue to download even after a phone call stopped everything. Suddenly I miss Go Zilla.
So we have been ahead of the curve for a long time. A lot of cover had to happen so we didn't find out the big dirty secrets about the industry. I think the one that shocked me the most was the console wars between Genesis and Super Nintendo. It turns out Sega lied about their console sales numbers to cover for other stuff. Nintendo's first real competition news Sony, and even then it looks like Sony lied a lot. For example, they were happy to talk about MK4 and motion capture, but not the 3D simulation part.
I guess this explains a lot. Gamers got old enough to look at statistics and talk to other gamers around the world. The usual subterfuge others could use didn't work anymore. That's probably the reason why so many companies went SJW. The average fan could see through bullshit, but SJWs can't. So, they stopped aiming for gamers.
