Part of the CCP domestic brainwashing is a bunch of pseudospiritual self-help mumbo jumbo that basically boils down to "making Xinnie money is good for your soul".

The opium part is more obvious, feel good addiction that takes over people's lives. Plus in China it could also have connotations of external sabotage because of the opium wars.
