Complacency is the death of objectivity. Simply put, trolls bring chaos into an organized structure. This lets you either sharpen your stone with facts or cede to a higher argument. We wouldn’t be here without skepticism, so for even the smallest interlude to question us brings about the refinement of our position or a change in how we view current situations. Downvotes are an anethema to the situation, not a response.

I agree that trolls are good for honing one's critical thinking skills (same goes for "misinformation"), but that doesn't mean they are good for a community. Chaos agents should always come from outside, and their FUD or truth filtered and brought in by someone who doesn't seek to destroy the community. I don't think downvotes affect a thing.
