Yeah, I agree with your points. I would argue also that the fact that everyone in Australia claims to be "middle class" and works/votes to secure their own interests is a massive factor here...

Extremely high wages. Extremely weak (read: simple, resource-based) economy. Corruption at all levels of government. Stupidly high "standards of living" (which are bullshit, anyway), etc. etc.

There's a lot at play here, and the ABC + SBS has far more to answer to/for than they would ever admit, naturally... :-/
