For reference, the trigger for this violence appears to have been the imprisonment of Jacob Zuma, former president of South Africa, for contempt of court after he refused to take part in an inquiry into corrupt arms deals during his time as president. KwaZulu Natal, where the riots are happening, is Zuma's home province.

The State Security Agency has alleged that former members, loyal to Zuma, who where fired by the current administration are instigating the unrest. The military has been deployed to strategic locations for this reason. I wouldn't rule out political factionalism just yet.
