This topic is connected to a lot of what's happening, because the left is in a self destructive purity spiral.
Each new puritan of the left is quickly ousted by an even purer newer puritan, to the point where older puritans of the left become "problematic", enemies of the continually updated current good-think. Not only do current people get unpersoned, cancelled, and censored, but all things historic are affected as well (text books, statues, philosophies, people, science, practices, traditions, countries, etc.) Normally this purity spiral would destroy itself and fizzle out. However, with the ever constant input of energy from the left, mainstream, and every facet of society they control, they can maintain it for a lot longer than it would last naturally.
Rather than judging people for who they were, what they did, and the times they lived, the left is forever updating their judgment criteria. Even people who made incredible achievements or were unique for their time, are judged without remorse under the new new criteria. Robert E. Lee was an abolitionist even though he fought for the south. Christopher Columbus made a profound achievement, both in his own time and relative to the historical impact, regardless of the consequences that followed. Thomas Jefferson, along with all the founding fathers of the U.S., were incredibly wise, and achieved what even today is seemingly impossible: fighting tyranny, winning, and giving power to the people. These are just 3 examples. Now, all their statues must be torn down and their history spit upon.
Instead of lauding the achievements of past peoples for what they were, the left condemns them. History is nuanced because people are nuanced, but instead the left jumps to black/white reasoning, and judges individuals as if one wrong step wholly condemns them, coloring all their other actions. People who achieved greatness in their time are condemned as completely evil because they didn't, by themselves, abolish slavery, embrace LGBTQ, pay reparations, apologize for their evilness, destroy the patriarchy, open their borders, embrace diversity, surrender their guns, give women and minorities equal rights immediately, fight and destroy anyone that disagreed with them, and whatever new criteria the left will tack on. If people aren't perfect, in every way, according to the left's current judgment, they must be cancelled, and due to the purity spiral, this definition of perfect continually narrows, to the point that no one will fit in it.
No one is perfect. No one can withstand a purity spiral. It's self destructive by its nature. By the left's logic, no statue should be erected, no history book written, no statement made, because no one and nothing they do is pure enough to withstand the left's forever redefined new judgment of "perfect".
