No, different storyline. Same general engine though it looks like.

Then I'll give it a try, I hated Kingmaker and almost all the companions but I did like the character creation, map interaction and rule implementation.

I'm going to wait for of "those" mods, if you get my drift. Kingmaker's launch was rough and I doubt the devs have gotten any better at bug shooting.
