But if the Bri'ish police carried the guns they need to stop certain violent crimes before innocent victims suffer, they wouldn't be able to virtue signal about how much more civilized their police forces are than in the US.

All Europeans virtue-signal about that, including countries where you have the military policing their capital city due to the threat of terrorism from Peacefuls (which I support, by the way).

The reason is not that it makes sense but because it makes them feel better. Like the way Americans virtue-signal about what they believe their country is better at.
