In Hawaii, Asians are the majority. Pacific Islanders (namely Micronesians) are the minority.
Asians control most of the positions of power, government, commerce, etc. Micronesians are eternally on government gibs and commit a majority of the violent crime, despite being ... less than 1 % of the population. And they haven't gone up like us Asians done through the classes - they have huge families, stay forever on government gibs, and their children turn out to be violent offenders.
They also adopted African-American bludz vs crips gangbanger culture.
There's also the Amazing appropriation of caribbean music like Reggae Jawaiian.
One of the more difficult things is deprogramming the idea that Polynesians somehow lost in hand to hand fights against europeans. They're taught they were dominated by white people in every museum, history lesson and school plays. It's always that they were made subserviant to the europeans as soon as they arrived. Then the noble savage stuff kicks in and claims they were completely without technology and much happier and better.
None of this is true, but explaining it is as close to insulting their heritage. So in areas where they dominate, being white is something you don't want to be on the last day of school.
I just find it interesting how Hawaii has turned into a microcosm carbon-copy of what's going on in the mainland when it comes to the class-race distinction.
Essentially the race/class structure breaks down like this:
Positions of power, priviledge, and propriety:- East/Southeast Asians, mostly Second to fifth generation orientals from China, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, etc and mainland white transplants
Maintenance/janitorial and manual labor jobs - Filipinos
Manual labor/some middle class jobs, but also high positions of power due to government-mandated "reparations" for Hawaii's annexation - Native Hawaiians (Kamehameha Schools, etc.)
"Dead end" minimum wage jobs and gibs, high crime rates - Pacific Islanders not from Hawaii.
The dichotomy in the race/class division in Hawaii is basically a copy of the mainland's, is it not?
Asians/whites in the upper class and positions of power
Maintenance/janitorial/manual labor and the lower middle class - Hispanics
Some middle class jobs but high positions of power due to government-mandated reservations - Native Americans
"Dead end" minimum wage jobs and eternal gibs, with a self-defeating culture that keeps them stuck as crabs in a bucket - Blacks
And this happened in Hawaii naturally, and this is DESPITE the HUWITE people "stealing" the natives land, Japanese-Americans ended up being the most populous and successful group.
It's even weirder in Tonga. There are more Chinese there than native Tongans. Meanwhile the fastest internet is about 3 MB. The kingdom is about 20 years behind the modern world, and no one is preparing them for these changes.
There are three nesias: Micronesia, Polynesian and one other I forget. But yeah, they tend to be the lower workers. I think I know why too.
I worked at an arcade and I noticed this parallel a lot. The locals wanted things a little bit older and run down. The white kids and tourists wanted everything to be brand new, and cheaper. The cheaper part was always girls.
I had people come in who had never seen the latest equipment and games, and didn't even know how to use it. Then I had people demanding I get the even newer stuff and let them play for hours.
If it was a group, I would actually get yelled at for not using equipment I only knew about in theory that we had. I hadn't been trained, and I suspect no one knew, how to use that equipment. It didn't matter if it was local or tourist, they expected this to be done for free and without me even questioning it.
Anyway, there are two separate networks in Hawaii. The first is the local Ohana. You never rise out of poverty, but they will always take care of you. At the arcade, these families would give me food and demand I eat it if they had a party.
The other network was about business and moving up in place. I was expected to sit back and let them do their thing. They would bring only enough food for themselves.
When we had parties on the calendar, we would skip a meal in case it was local.
In the gaming world, I noticed that gamers liked the dark edgy feel to their place. They wanted well made graffiti and other designs. They also hyperfocused on the game being played and ignored everything else. This was especially the PC/XBox/Playstation Gamer. They felt like someone was judging them because the game was M and they were in 3rd grade. Most of the crew just let them at the game, but I wouldn't.
Bounce over to women, who tended to be more social gamers. They wanted to game together, have more light and color shown. It was especially important that they all play together, and I knew they were done when some of them started sitting down during a game or two.
These parallel groups often showed what I needed to prepare for and what to do. I have seen it a lot in the gamer conversations. I'll admit, the news tends to use them as a way to control the people a bit as well.
Let me clue you in on something.

Does this sound familiar?
