I believe if we hadn't funded middle eastern terrorists to kill other middle eastern terrorists and if we hadn't destabilized moderate Muslim leaders and installed jihadists, then a single tribe or nation would have eventually gained power and consolidated the Arab's massive human resources and massive wealth into a superpower to rival us.
Instead we gave the Muslims what they wanted: endless jihad... except we ensured a careful balance of power so no Arab nation gained a foothold and all the Arab nations ate each other while destroying all of their economies and infrastructure.
If we hadn't done this, right now the world would be totally fucked.
