Barry Goldwater, for example, who stuck to his guns no matter how many enemies he'd made or how badly it crippled his already marginal chances at victory in 1964 (which were further hobbled when LBJ had the CIA spy on him, but of course that never got as much attention as Watergate).
But men like him seem to be rarer than diamonds in the best of times, and these times are anything but. The modern political class, much like most of his generation, doesn't deserve to clean his shoes with their tongues.
