When the economic collapse hits our nation, it will recede our nation into chaos, China, Russia, India, and the EU will take advantage and begin their international rampage, while Brazil, Turkey, Israel, Iran, and the Saudis will begin whatever they want to do regionally. The US is still protected by oceans and the relatively unimportant Canada and in this time period, a Mexico no one will want to deal with.
Being isolated by oceans and two nations that without massive military expansion/shipments couldn't take the domestic front, the US will be relatively safe. The only thing of value here that would be easily obtainable would be nuclear weapons and other military equipment, grab-and-go operations. When this US collapse happens, the decades of Weimar-like conditions and a failed economy will push the people into desperation. Enter the first American dictator. A nationalist, he will likely be able to rebuild the US, not to the level of world power but to a respectable position, and could even expand back to that if enough wars weaken the rest of the world. However, I believe that after seeing the effects of 80-90+ years of globalization on the US, I think most will likely not want to return to a state of power, rather becoming isolationist.
Then you have the powers that be, the most important faction in all of this. They have a direct need to take full control and establish some sort of world government, one with direct control. Backed by the Serpent, they will want to take control, and according to the bible will take control after a series of disasters leaves upwards of 2.5 billion dead. Any remaining isolationist America would be a threat, so it is in their best interest to ensure that the economy doesn't hit Great Depression levels, which will trigger the right-wing backlash.
Mexico is uninvadable for the exact same reason the USA was in WW2: A gun behind every blade of grass. But in their case, it is cartels and criminal empires, not citizen militia. Cell-based and segregated, yet unified, faster to respond than government bureaucracy by a mile, with less than no concern over "honor" or fair play, they in fact seek the opposite. The world looks horrified at the Middle East villains pouring boiling water or acid down throats to kill children. To some cartels that's a mercy killing.
