I have no good answer to this but the fact that is a lot more visible is what changed. The ones creating the media are far more willing to compromise the quality of their work in order to push politics.

    In order to be progressive you make the male characters cartoonish or dumb and the female character a mary sue. We now have black characters in medieval europe, even historical white characters and we pretend that this is  the norm.  Now we must have a gay character, a transgender one, a black character, brown, asian and what ever other intersectional character they can think off but they can not be the bad guys, this ruins any mystery the movie would otherwise have. 
  
 My point is that, yes there always been politics in movies, games, books etc. but it was done from a point of view made from the lived experience of the writer and quality was the main selling point, not the politics, now we have brain washed affirmative action hires that do not have life experience pushing for politics over quality.


    One other thing that I guess happened was that the politics changed from a positive message to a negative one.  There is to much hate against men, hate against whites, hate against capitalism that reeks out. I find negative messaging more obvious then the positive one.
