There is so much incorrect information in the article, I'm not even going to list them all. Absurd to see NYT play dumb about why liberals (their primary audience) might be misinformed and overreacting, when the MSM + gov has spent the last year and a half endlessly hyping COVID.
When you see that the CDC admitted months ago that their Covid death numbers were off by the tiny margin of just 96%, how can anyone still worry about Covid unless from shear ignorance or to satisfy some agenda.
Incomplete and out of order but you get the idea. Covid is just the latest in an endless series of MSM+gov fear topics to keep the weak-minded scared and obedient. Notice how none of these were really that big of a deal or were complete hoaxes?
Overpopulation
Global cooling
Reefer madness
No more landfill space left on Earth
Nuclear power
Acid rain
Thermonuclear destruction a la Russia
Ozone hole
Satanic cult day care workers
Japan taking over America
Unintended acceleration
Crack cocaine + crack babies
Saddam Hussein
Global Warming
Rising sea levels
Swine flu
ADHD
Muammar Gaddafi
Ebola
Meth epidemic
Osama Bin Laden
ISIS
Net Neutrality
Bashar al-Assad
China taking over America
Donald Trump
Russia
Climate change
Covid
Peaceful conservative protesters in D.C.
White supremacists
Covid variants <--------------------------------- You are here
Damn I feel old being that I remember most of these.
I hate how articles like these emphasize things. They never make statements of actual data itself unless they can cherry pick something bad. They just use bad adjectives instead, something like "an absurd amount of people die every year from the meth epidemic.' What does that even mean, 1-in-10 or 1-in-10 million? My friends would tell you how much I harp on about "everything is a matter of perspective," but it's true. Most people seem to think it's crazy to think like that and would rather prefer to be told how horrible or not a data set is. Hence, where we are today.
What I found a bit crazy is how bold they've gotten at still presenting real data. They show it right there on the page--I'm supposed to believe both that "Republicans underestimate Covid" and that 51% of Republicans think that you have > 20% chance of going in hospital if you get Covid, when the actual range is 1%-5%. These two things can't possibly be true at the same time, but instead of questioning, most just respond with "baaaaa."
Oh, and you forgot the Nuclear War with North Korea. I'm pretty sure I was supposed to have planned my funeral for that one too.
The crack babies grew up and became the weird retards you see around you.
Overpopulation has to do with the effect of a species on the ecosystems around it, and considering human activity of all kinds is of a massive and far-reaching scale, yeah, it doesn't matter if you can shove all of a population in one little place, you could say the same thing about all those species you ree that need "culls" because "starvation". Well, tell UNICEF to start culling instead of feeding. Why should other species suffer because human cunts and dicks are out of control in Asia and Africa? Here's to the vaccine sterlizing 2/3 of the lot of them.
This one's the most controversial, but I suspect it's not such a coincidence that the progressives demanding we normalise a psychosis-inducing drug are acting rather psychotic.
Thermonuclear destruction a la Russia
A mixed example: some of the worst fearmongering happened decades after the United States and USSR jointly decided that this was an existential threat that needed to be mitigated.
Ozone hole
We made it a non-issue by changing our behaviour, phasing out the chemicals that were doing most of the damage.
Osama Bin Laden
ISIS
I'd actually argue the problem is being undersold by an Islamophilic media that doesn't want to admit that their beliefs are not heterodoxy in Islam.
Now that those chemicals aren't being put into the atmosphere, and that is what "fixed" the ozone hole, then why was the hole bigger than ever measured in 2020?
The over-reaction to Covid has been off the charts but at least some people have died of Covid. How many have died from the Ozone hole? Again, another sky is falling scare.

I don't agree with some of your examples:

If you repeat a lie often enough....
