And don't get me started with electric cars. Iirc the best batteries have an energy density 1/40th that of gasoline.

The effective difference is closer to 1/10th, because an electric motor is far more efficient at converting battery charge into motion (and can convert some of its motion back into battery charge) than an internal combustion engine is for petrol.
