You assume they have any idea what they are doing. They don't. They're a societal anti-immune disease. An open society was a good thing, because the inevitable problems could be pointed to and solved. What then happens when these mechanisms are then turned on what makes the society great, like traditional values?

Not everything has to be collectively directed. Moral rot has consequences.
