They kinda fucked themselves with their work ethic too, it's hard to meet women and get married when you work 80hrs a week and are obligated to go drink with your boss when he decides to go out to avoid his dragon lady of a wife or you'll be seen as anti-social and looked down on or passed up for promotion.
That's why many collectivist nations have arranged marriages, parents introducing you to girls, and high value on highschool relationships.
There were solutions to these problems traditionally. The modernizing of the world removed them without addressing the other half of the equations. Which is a problem with "women's lib" the world over.
So is this why a yuge slice of anime is all high school romance based?
From my understanding unironically yes. After high school you are expected to crack down on career mode and be already on the fast track to being married.
Remember, the Japanese have a term (Christmas Cake) entirely to denote that woman over 25 are completely unwanted because they are too old. That means if you aren't making long term choices in high school for a mate you won't make it.
So high school is when you still have options and free time to play around and "find love" because the moment its over you are all business.
Hmm that makes sense. I’ve always wondered why this is the case but I’ve never seen any “proof” on why it is
They did/do have that, called Miai. From what I've read on the subject it primarily died out in the 18th century (Still the Edo period with the Tokugawa shogunate running Japan and the Sakoku isolation policy still in effect) with only 6ish % of marriages being Miai in 2005.
