This was a band that inspired a thousand other house bands, Was there in the early 90s at the start of the House/electronic experimentation in the French underground, got an animated film done by Leiji Matsumoto and won several awards with their album in 2013. So yeah, it's sad to see em go.
As to why they'd break up, Rumor has it that they broke up because one of them was developing health issues with hearing (tinnitus) and didn't want to hold back the other one because of it… which is also why they haven't done anything, neither tours nor new albums, in ages.
I still crank Discovery on occasion - great fucking album.
Back when Toonami wasn't cucked, I'm pretty sure they played Interstella 5555, or at least part of it.
The Tron: Legacy soundtrack also had some bangers.
Can only imagine how soul crushing that kind of thing is for musicians to end up with.
The movie "It's All Gone Pete Tong" touches on something similar when a DJ goes deaf and has to deal with the life changing consequences, a movie I consider one of Paul Kaye's better works as while he's still the usual arse of a self he's typecast as in things he ends up using that very well as the in character coping mechanism.
Well shit...
This was my introduction to Daft Punk on Newgrounds way back in the day
Didn't they also have a fair number of arguments over the years? Couldve sworn that there were rumors of them wanting to break up for a long time now.
Saw the news yesterday. They weren't my favorite by any means but they did a lot for house music and put out a lot of great stuff over the years. Really sad I never got a chance to see em live.
Expect to start seeing more acts retire or die. Ffs Carl Cox turns 60 next year. The big names are getting old :(
Alot of the old rockers back from the 80s are turning around 60 or so yet they still go on, having done alot of hard living as a result.
