You can thank teacher's unions for this shit. Teachers are basically happy because either they get to now basically half ass their jobs or, they don't have to work at all because the school is completely closed. All the while collecting a full salary and benefits.
Now if schools were to reopen all those teachers would have to actually go back to work, thereby cancelling their year long sabbatical. They don't want to do that so they will help fearmonger to keep schools closed indefinitely (I remember the Chicago's Teacher's Union said that the push to reopen schools was rooted in "white supremacism"). Really it's a trend you notice in that the people who are most likely to be pro-lockdown are either people who are in comfy WFH jobs, Govt. Employees who are stoked that they get money for nothing now, and lazy ass NEETS who don't have to feel like their total lack of social interaction is a problem anymore.
I do want to say that it's mostly public school teachers unions pushing for this. Private school teachers (who are often higher skilled/more passionate) absolutely want schools to reopen. They want to reopen because they understand that these lockdowns are hurting the kids the most. Kids are going to fall behind both academically and socially. The poorer kids are going to be screwed over by zoom learning, and all kids, need to have social interaction.
The result of these lockdowns is going to be a generation of kids who will be less developed than prior generations, and believe me when I say that when those chickens come home to roost we are going to be FUCKED. Because these kids are going to one day take over, and it's unclear if they're going to be able to handle adulthood as well as prior generations.
