they just can't stand the thought of those evil settlers getting to lead happy, non-totally-destroyed and even somewhat fulfilling lives anywhere.

Also explains much of the hate for rural people and flyover states.

Lots of white people, many of whom won't submit to the decrees and proscriptions imparted by their coastal betters.
