They had no interests besides work, had shitty family lives, and no hobbies.
I have been telling my boss for going on 15 years -- long before I ever worked for the guy -- that when his kids are grown and out of the house he will regret all the late hours he spent in the office that he could have spent with them; and that it isn't worth being able to climb one rung higher up the corporate ladder.
I can understand the people who found companies doing it, because they're building something for themselves which conceivably could be passed onto their children. But I'll never understand the people who do it so they can have the Director title instead of the Senior Manager title at MegaCorp.

Third: Fucking boomers and protestant types who believe that work = salvation. I've had a lot of managers in my life who could only find purpose by being the type to bill as many hours to clients in a week as possible. They had no interests besides work, had shitty family lives, and no hobbies.
