I was all hyped to buy RDR2 when it came to PC, but then they went and put it only on Epic.
Even now, a long time after it went to Steam I still haven't bought it. Maybe I should see if it's on sale since my plans for playing CP2077 have evaporated.
... $60 for the ultimate edition? Nah I'll pass...
It would make sense, they keep giving away "free" games. Spying is quite possible, but mining bit coin makes the most sense. China shouldn't be able to keep purchasing American companies
so, the current bitcoin network hashrate is 140 million terahashes (exahashes) per second. That is 10 to the power of 18. CPU bitcoin mining is such a joke, that the best I could find is hashrate for an i7 2600, which is 24 megahashes, which is 10 to the power of 6. So dividing that by 4, since we are talking about a single core, and the dividing it further by 10, because lets say the launcher uses 10% of a single core, you get 0.6 megahashes per second. Now, lets triple that, to account for increases in IPC. That is a wild overestimation, but whatever. So that is 1.8 megahashes or 0.00000000018 exahashes per second or 0.0000018 terahashes per second
The latest ASIC bitcoin miner has the hashrate of 110 terahashes per second. This is 61111111 times faster than the CPU. It can yield on average, without electricity costs, 24$ a day. So on this CPU, it would make 0.00000004$ a day, assuming it runs non stop. So lets cut that in half to be left with not even remotely average power-on time of a computer in an average household. To make a 1 dollar per day, they would have to have an install base of 25 000 000 users. For 1 dollar a day. If every single person on the planet owned at least one computer, and every single computer had EGS installed, they would make 300$ mining bitcoin per day. That is how retarded your statement is.
"Increased CPU temps" seems like a very scary way to say this is a shit client, built on a shit web framework, that spins its wheels all the time, and AMD is terrible at managing idle power states and shoves 1.5 volts into the cores when they get unparked.
"14x more data than steam!!11" sounds like a very scary way to say, it is a shit client that sends mostly redundant data that nobody can really use. If they were seriously trying to spy, they would just need a few packets with all your locally stored passwords, MRUs, etc.
Just like literally every single one of the "epic man bad" takes I have heard, this is just straight up jumping over hanlon's razor for the sake of shitting at the approved youtube opinion cartel targets. And I say that as someone who is very much not a fan of hanlon's razor. So fuck off you coward, try picking actually unpopular targets.
Man, not two weeks ago I realised the epic games launcher was always idling at 5% CPU usage, even when it was just sitting in the system tray.
I figured it was probably just glitched, and removed it from startup.
Apparantly it's fucking spying on me for the CCP.
Very likely sending your porn collection to Timmy's email for his perusal!
He knows, before you do, when you get an email.

I played the version acquired from the local scurvy sufferer, and it felt so... Eh... I uninstalled it.

Do you have any idea what is the profitability of running a single core of the latest CPU at 5% for the purposes of bitcoin mining?
When you get that processing power for free? Infinite.

You acknowledge that it's shit and then act as if that's not reason enough to be aware of what it's doing?
How am I not being aware by what it is doing, by being definitionally aware of what it is doing by acknowledging it is shit?
