Agreed. Federal Secession is both not reasonable, and wouldn't be popular either. Americans like the United States. They don't like Communists, and the Communists don't like Americans. I don't think anyone would want to see an armed and militarized border between Utah and Oregon, especially when Oregonians should be liberated anyway.
Again, I re-state: State Secession will be a tenable answer. Blue states will have ungovernable red territory. That red territory will want protection from either red states, or will operate independently. Only a few house seats would change hands if the states move borders. New states could form when Puerto Rico gets brought into the Senate. It's even possible that the reverse takes place. Some swath of a Red state that has a blue city/region/coast could seperate even more easily as Blue from Red, than Red from Blue.
Dissolving the union is utter lunacy, wouldn't be popular, and would guarantee the rise of China as an uncontested super-power. But, re-drawing the states is absolutely workable, and both sides might find a reason to do it.
The problem right now is that state secession requires consent from the legislature of the state. No way California lets the Central Valley secede, nor that New York lets upstate secede. There are too many captive EV's at stake.
Right now.
State's are already in the process of turning Red and Blue. Ohio and Flordia going Red long term is a problem for the Dems. If Texas goes Blue, along with California and New York, that's not going to be tolerable for the Reps. The more aggressive the Dems get with the Reps, the more civil disobedience will occur, and the more state secession will be an amicable solution to maintain order and peace. Not only that, but you've also got depopulation of cities on the rise too.
It is very clear to me that the political situation is highly flexible at the moment. The best thing for any establishment power structure to do is secure new positions where the flexing seems to stop. The best and easiest solution to continuing tension and problems will be for people to start making deals and re-drawing political lines.
