Meh, there were all kinds of edgelordy, shitty .wads back in the day. It was just a little harder to trade 'em around. But we mostly just remember the better ones (like the Simpsons .wad), if only because those did manage to make it to the BBS scenes.
Meanwhile, I'll always remember the Christian dude who claimed Doom was actually a pretty Christian game, because the idea is to go around killing demons ...
My parents weren't particularly religious, we went to church for a while until i got sick on the way out the door one time, never went back regularly after that.
My mother was a massive, massive prude though and would abide by the age ratings.. Except for diablo 1/2 for some reason.
I guess she never saw andariel, or well, anything from diablo 1, i've still got the butcher's room seared into my memory.
Of course, these days were both horror junkies, maybe i go a bit deeper than she does though.
Also didn't help that the kids across the street dad built computers for fun so they had enough for the 2 younger ones and me and my brother to have 4 way lan matches/play duke nukem/quake/doom/whatever the fuck else.
Good times... good times. They always had the newest PC games and multiple entirely legitimate copies for offline play, got my first taste of diablo 2/LOD before we got our own copy.

According to Masters of Doom, that was the reasoning of a Mormon developer on the team.
