There are many reasons we are in that hole:

politicians cannot to admit they were wrong
governments are slaves to the media and their hysterics and moral panics
the whole masks/lockdown issue has become largely political (left vs right, establishment vs the people, etc) so they have to double down on principle
it's a perfect excuse for more laws, powers and taxes
it's a great distraction from other failures
it accelerates the destruction of the middle class and small/mid-sized business
