Well for one, it's not Democratic or Totalitarian. It's a single-party Communist state. It's not like a dictator gets into every little detail of a huge country. This guy has watched too much Game of Thrones. Stalin would have not concerned himself with the day-to-day dealings of the plebs. He has a whole party of people to do that for him.
Does he source anything after the 1930s? You're not even getting anything from the post-war Soviet states from that. Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, the Baltics and Balkans have a lot stronger negative opinion being they didn't get a choice and they weren't the "preferred" class like a русский.
This guy is also reading all the propaganda as if it's truth. Just because they called their news правда doesn't mean it is. Their entire model is presenting things like free speech and open criticism as if it exists and was normal. That's what bugs me is it's becoming so common in the world to looking at everything by isolating the positive points of view on things you like and negative points of view on things you don't. There are good and bad elements to nearly every political system, even Communism and Nazism. It wouldn't be all that hard to present Nazi Germany as a great place if you take it from a certain point of view.
It's so cute though that these useful idiots only get "community" out of communism, as if the community itself will actually decide things like "intended" without realizing that will never happen. You're only trading a class of elite "betters" with a smaller, more powerful one.
Didn't the communist Bolsheviks kill off and suppressed the Menshiviks, the Democratic Socialists and Anarchists? They had a couple revolts and Lenin crushed them iirc.
And Stalin exiled and assasinated Trotsky because Trotsky would keep writing salty articles bitching about Stalin.
Yeah that's true it was a stretch to say the Russians got a choice, being that it was really more of the result of the Russian revolution, civil war, or whatever you want to call it. I have gotten the idea from some readings (Bezmenov for example) that Russian heritage was at least afforded slightly better opportunity, but to the Party, that was probably no more than being the slightly better smelling shit in the pile of shit.
Another mind game they played was their very name--Bolshevik being based off the Russian for "majority" and Menshivik being "minority". I don't think they even were the majority when they adopted, but it's like the Anti-facists being the actual facists. They just said to hell with that and picked a name that worked for them.
