I've never been a huge fan of the stereotypical anime facial styles. As I've gotten more into Japanese media, it's grown on me, but mainly when they get at least a little away from the tropes. What I really love is how well they do expressions though. They are a bit over the top most of the time, but they are just well placed.
The stories have grabbed me a lot more, even though I'd say at times they lack depth. Of course at other times they have too much depth. I don't need perfection though. A lot of times they stick with the concept of things like the boy going on the grand adventure, etc. There's a reason stories like that have stood the test of time and I enjoy those things that would be considered old and tired by the wokeists.
Of course to the point of the post, I do appreciate how they are never afraid to have women be women. It's not even that all women are either, but it really sticks out when western media has gone all in on strong, manly woman. As if the only way to be a strong woman is to pretend you're a man.
For sure, I've been trying to pick up Japanese a bit as well. My depth of experience with Anime and Japanese media is still pretty limited but growing. Doesn't hurt that so much of Western media has lost my interest.
