They didn't catch or die from the plague. They had heart conditions that needed surgical intervention and there wasn't a single surgeon in the hospital that could perform the surgery on them but also laws in place to "protect" Aussies from the plague wouldn't allow them to be transferred to a hospital where there was a surgeon who could perform the surgery they required to live
