Happy to say that my parents stopped watching Wheel of Time. My mom told me her and my dad were watching it when it came out and I was pretty surprised and my dad asked me why I didn't watch it since he knew I read the books. I told him because the showrunner seems to hate the books. My dad rolled his eyes and called me a book purist (he teases me about that as well with comic books because I don't watch many of those anymore).
I asked my mom why they stopped watching and my dad said "they went gay on us". Like me they are devout Christians (well I do my best to be) so they aren't interested in heavy lgbt content or at this point any so, also like me, they watch a lot of older content. I told them that in the books it is there but not really prevalent and not something you would expect someone who simply wants to adapt a book series to focus on. I used to think my parents where silly to stop watching shows for that reason but I can understand that mindset now.
The three most trendy groups in Hollywood right now are lgbt, women, and blacks (although I don't think straight black males are very desirable to hollywood). At one time a lot of people would've given shows a chance but not anymore. With me I am wary about anything made after 2014 when I really started to notice things.
Ironically I would say the obsession with diversity has made every show look exactly alike. You know with woke storytelling who will be the good and bad guy, who will be in charge, if a woman is a villain then there will be some justification, etc. With fantasy look at how "reflecting the modern world" just ruins it. They can't make their own stories to do the reflecting they want so they tear down classics. Critical Drinker once said that Willow, Wheel of Time, Witcher Blood Origin, and Rings of Power are essentially the assembly line creations... diverse fantasy 1, 2, and 3.
I'm a big reader and after Sci-Fi/Fantasy one of my favorite genres is murder mystery/cop drama and I've read books with gay detectives but the focus was on the mystery or finding the killer. Now it is everywhere and I'm convinced there is a rule that says that same sex couples always have to be shown in a positive light and the shill media acts like it is the best piece of cinema since Casablanca. Stranger Things Season 3 where instead of the reformed jock falling in love with the nerdy girl (which makes sense for a show that is a homage to the 80s) we get subverted expectations and I don't watch the last of us but I hear the critics loved the last episode.
Anyway, sorry for my rant, I'll now try to get my parents to listen to The Wheel of Time audiobook
Goes without saying they have no ideas. Matlock , Heat of the Night, Little House on the Prairie, and Walker Texas Ranger were shows my grandmother watched religiously and I enjoy the reruns when I can. Im sure the female Matlock will fight against the patriarchy. Honestly it would be so easy to make a show about a female lawyer. As for King of the Hill, as a Texan I love how it lovingly pokes fun at Texas culture but I doubt with it being on Hulu that we will see that.
Best thing to do is ignore them and stop feeding the reboot beast. Someone told me the night court reboot wasn’t bad but I’m just so tired of reboots in general as well as race/gender swapping
As my journey into weebdom continues (maybe I could do a Youtube miniseries on that) I have another recommendation request. I remember someone once telling me that I would like My Hero Academia since I am a fan of old school super-hero comics and I've heard My Hero Academia be described as a love letter to comic books. I plan on getting that omnibus soon but I would also like to know what are some good Sci-Fi/Fantasy anime or mangas? Probably the very first anime I ever saw was Robotech because my older brother was really into it when I was a kid. I read his Robotech book over and over. As for fantasy, I guess Howl's Moving Castle would count? I actually learned recently that was based on a manga so I want to check that out.
So is there any good sci-fi anime/manga y'all could recommend?
Any predictions? Considering the trendiest representation today is lgbt, black (although straight black male is not so desirable anymore), or female. I fully expect one of them to be the hero or some girl power or secret gay campers being abused. Intersectional storytelling isn’t pretty easy to guess. I think it’s set in the 80s. Or I would think so if not the 70s. With real writers this would be a cool homage to 80s horror which I love kind of like how most of Stranger things was (minus season 3 how they changed the plot for the jock and the nerd girl to be romantically involved so she could be a lesbian because that was all over 80s tv).
Also, I know Nerdrotic has mentioned that modern Hollywood loves prequels so they can show a female or “marginalized” person doing it first. I guess Dr Who would be best example or I hear the captain in Star Trek discovery was the foster sister of Spock and mentored him
Anyway, based on modern entertainment how do you see this going down?
This topic came up when I was talking to my brother recently. He has three girls and they just finished watching the Obi-Wan show and my brother said that show was such a blatant example of pushing girl power where it made no sense and it clearly showed the writers didn't know or didn't care about Star Wars. Now my brother likes Andor and Mandalorian so he isn't at my level where I cancelled Disney plus and truly despise disney Star Wars, but around his girls I remain positive since I don't want to ruin their fun because the sequels were the first Star Wars they were exposed to and then they watched the rest. I am thinking for Christmas I may buy some EU books for his daughters to get them into that timeline.
But he was just frustrated at the endless push to get women into things that generally appeal to men and he said men and women generally like different things. It's just that simple.
I would love to be at one of the panels at a Con where someone like Anita Sarkessian or the Star Wars, RIngs of Power, Wheel of Time writers give their usual speech about not seeing many women, people of color, etc. and simply ask them why they don't understand that certain thing appeal to more guys than women or that there were always women/minorities that were into these hobbies but they think something is wrong if a large number of white guys enjoy something.
Anyway, do you see this trend waning? I'd like to think so but even with constant flops nothing changes. I really miss the days of being laughed at for reading comic books or a sci-fi novel because the worthless activists in charge of the shows or the ones winning the Hugos or Nebulas were most likely the very people who mocked nerds or thought gamers were losers until they saw those things being trendy and jumped on board.
Over New Years they had the Twilight Zone marathon and people were complaining because they mixed in the Jordan Peele TZ which I’m glad they complained. It made me go on YouTube and watch the 80s version and the 02 version onTubi. As a kid in the 80s I loved all the anthology series like the TZ reboot, Hitchcock, Hitchhiker, Tales From the Darkside, Tales from the Crypt, monsters, and Amazing Stories.
I used to wish that they would bring those back but considering how many horror movies today are made for “modern day audiences” I guess I’m glad they didn’t. I know Peele’s TZ got rave reviews from the critics. I mean he had an episode mocking trump and one about a white cop shooting a black teen. I mean how original! To be fair I do think if Peele could stop being obsessed with race he w could tell some good stories.
Granted there are the reruns and a ton of old pulps and reprints of Vault of Horror and the old sci-fi comics like weird science
Just got my first ever mangas in (Fist of the North Star and Ah My Goddess). I read them from right to left right? Opposite of what I normally do right?
Not sure if I’ll get the game eventually but one thing I’ll never understand is if you are a man who believes he is a woman or vice versa why not just play as the sex you believe you are? Granted it was idiotic from the start to listen to a tiny fraction of the population and give them this much influence.
So as I've mentioned a few times before Skyrim is one of if not my favorite game in all my years of gaming, and I will probably still be playing modded Skyrim when I'm in my 90s. I recently finished the Midwood Isle mod, downloaded a mod to give Serana a major overhaul when it comes to her dialogue (adding a lot more for her to say), and now I'm going back to explore Wyrmstooth.
I'm curious as to what you would like to see in ES6? I know we live in a woke era but I have to believe Bethesda wouldn't be dumb enough to overload their major franchise with that nonsense. Here is what I'd love to see:
At the very least a book that gives a conclusive end to the Civil War. One of my nitpicks with Skyrim is that the Civil War quest doesn't seem finished and the Thalmor are still there. I figured they would have a DLC later on to address that as well as a King's Moot. Guess I was wrong, but there is a mod that restores how they originally wanted the Civil War to be. I just wish they would've kept their original Magic School plans as well .
Being able to build your own villages or towns. Skyrim has a ton of open land and all you can do is build a house.
Being able to be a whatever the equivalent to a Jarl is.
If you have improved speech skill being able to convince bandits not to fight and work some sort of trade with them or even hire them as mercenaries when needed.
Finally, do you think at some point they should let you time travel or go to wherever the living Dwemer are or were? I know some people think their appeal is in being mysterious.
Despite how many nerd sites I block, it seems for every one I block 10 more pop up. I guess this is what I get for looking at a lot of nerd sites and gaming sites before they were sold to/taken over by twitter activists.
I was sent a predictable article and you could've played a drinking game with all the buzzwords or phrases it had (my tolerance is not what it used to be so I would have to take a sip of Coors or Miller Lite). Which do you find the most annoying or most stupid out of the following:
The hand wringing about women entering male spaces in the hobby and droning on about the "toxicity"? Granted I just see that as men or women who aren't real fans of something getting pushback from people who actually care.
or
The complaining (usually from fake geek girl who jumped on the trend but could be a guy) who talk about the "harassment received" by creepy nerds asking her deep lore questions. Aka a guy asked her what comic books she likes or what games she plays because she was wearing a certain t-shirt.
If so what did you think? I help with the youth at church and suggested it to one of the high school kids because he mentioned an interest in the multiverse idea and I suggested he watch Sliders. I didn’t see it til I got Hulu in 2010 but I remember when it originally aired. I hate that it ends on a cliffhanger and they couldn’t even do a book to close out the series. Lead guy leaving hurt the series as well. Cro-Mags was an interesting concept but maybe they ran with it too long. Overall I like the show and the original cast was best
Are there any other anime platforms? Some of the free streaming services have older anime which I love but I was looking to get a pure anime service.
Merry Christmas to all my Christian friends or to all those who celebrate. For those who don't celebrate, enjoy your day and try to relax. I'll be going to church and hanging out with family. Then today and tomorrow I'll be reading Heart of the Jedi, watching Ah! My Goddess, and playing Skyrim (modded). Hope everyone has a great day!
I was looking through some old games on steam and I came across one called Afterlife I think and as the title indicates you are in charge of the afterlife. I’m wondering if there are any other games in a similar vein? I guess like age of empires/civilization in the afterlife. Or maybe sim city in the afterlife would be a better description
Last night I finished a reread of the original expanded universe Thrawn Trilogy. As I've mentioned before, I cancelled Disney Plus and when I'm asked if I am a Star Wars fan I specify I'm a pre-Disney fan. I heard that Disney Plus is going to do an Heir to the Empire movie (obviously bastardized) and it made me want to read that trilogy again since I hadn't read it in years. Heir to the Empire will always be special to me because I got it for my 12th birthday in 92 and I had no idea there were books that continued the story. Since then I have amassed a lot of EU books/comic books and still have many to go. My only regret is that I couldn't find the original covers so I had to buy the disney re-releases. I know there are some who say that shows Disney that there is interest in the EU but I doubt they care.
I would like your opinion on the following:
I always thought that it was a dumb move to totally get rid of the EU. I think Disney could've had their own canon while continuing the EU canon since there was a ready fan base. Another thing they could've done would've been to do animated adaptations of some of the EU stories like Old Republic, Solo Trilogy, Thrawn Trilogy, etc.
I've heard that if Disney had done that knowing what we know now about how crappy the sequels were it would've made them look very bad to have an adaptation for something like New Jedi Order showing a Luke that fans wanted or the Thrawn Trilogy showing Mara Jade and the rest of them. Maybe even Darth Bane or Revan. It would've been more money for Disney although I do remember Heart of the Jedi being taken off of Amazon after all the buzz it got (currently reading that now).
Do you think that would've made Disney look bad? Especially considering what we got.
I will say this was my first exposure to the shill media because when the EU got discontinued a lot of nerd sites I used to frequent were crapping all over the EU and saying it was a wonderful idea which confused me because those same sites used to praise it. Then after Ghostbusters 2016 came out and they were saying the original Ghostbusters was never that good, I understood what was happening.
As I’ve mentioned before I’m working my out of anime normie territory. I’m currently watching Ah My Goddess (yes I know, but it’s a catchy show) and I know it’s based on a manga so I was wondering if anime adaptations do a better job than here in the west. I know Japan isn’t perfect but it seems like they value the source material a lot more than they do here. Or am I mistaken?
Since I buy comic books (dollar bin/back issues) I have them stacked and don't put them in a long box til I read them. Currently have about 300 to read. Today I was reading a Spectacular Spider-Man (in my opinion the most underrated comic book series ever and the first Spider-Man series I ever read) from 1977 and in the section where Stan Lee has his soapbox he was hyping an upcoming special comic book highlighting the female super-heroes of Marvel and he listed some of the big names that would be included in the comic.
Stuff like this along with the 80s/90s ads showing a group of boys along with one or two girls playing video games always annoy me because there seemed to be a modern day script where any female/minority in the gaming, comic book, or any other nerdy IP says that when they were growing up they didn't see anyone who looked like them or didn't feel "welcome" and they act like women/minorities have never been in anything until woke Hollywood came along. I call BS on that every time because while you may have someone be rude to you, 99 times out of 100 if you know your stuff or show a genuine interest in something nerds will welcome you with open arms. The vitriol over men (especially white men) enjoying a hobby is off the charts in the last decade especially.
Ironically a comic book company, gaming company, or any studio today would never hire a woman or a minority who actually is interested in the material. They would rather hire people who can't shut up about diversity.
I learned Spanish in high school and I went to a Summer Camp before senior year where you had to speak Spanish 24/7 and were kicked out if you were heard speaking English. As an adult I've had some jobs where I had to speak Spanish all or most of the time and on the way to becoming fluent I started listening to the music. One time I went to a spanish music store (was working in a heavy hispanic area) and the owner told me that there wasn't anything there I would like. I spoke to him in Spanish and explained I liked the music and he immediately started showing me what he had and what was on sale and I bought quite a few cds that day. Nobody in the store "looked like me" but that didn't stop me.
If so, what did you think? I recently read it
I get info sent to me regarding classic rock or older metal and I saw a followup on an article about a black teenage girl who had a Metallica shirt on in one of her videos and all the "mean messages" she got. Of course the mean messages were simply people asking what she knew about Metallica or to name a song. The article I saw was a followup saying that she "clapped back" (hate that term) at the trolls by playing a classic Metallica song on her guitar. I no longer follow that site by the way.
I swear within woke/sjw media there are some tried and true scripts. This one reminds me of the ones who get angry because they are huge fans of an IP but get angry when someone asks them about their favorite comic book, character, book, etc.
I guarantee you a white teenage male would probably get asked what he knows about Metallica if he wore their shirt. She could've simply talked about how much she liked the band and moved on. Anyone with any online presence will get hate messages more mean spirited one. I remember Jeremy from Geeks & Gamers talked about the death threats or racist messages they get, but they move on and nobody is going to write some sobbing article about them.
I love classic country and my favorite country artist is Hank Williams Sr. I have gotten some odd looks years back when I would buy the cds but people would ask me how I got into him and I told them. Is that so hard? I made some friends that way as well. Just like a lady asked me how I knew about Zeppelin when I wore my Zeppelin shirt. in middle school my older brother told me that the rap music I listened to was all sampled from older stuff, and that made me go out and listen to old school funk/R&B and I had plenty of adults ask me what I knew about those groups.
As a nerd I love it when people ask me why Superman or Spiderman are my favorite characters, why I can't shut up about the greatness of Skyrim, why you should read the Expanded Universe books and ignore Disney Star Wars, and the list goes on. I swear some people are fueled by their need to feel like a victim.
