I am a man and was homeless for over a year during the 2008 recession. I went to the shelter one time only. It was full of bedbugs and drug addicts. Shady people who were drunks that knew I was a freshly trying to take advantage of whatever I may have had they wanted. I didn't even stay the night. I decided to stay in my car and try to not freeze to death during the winter. The cops stopped and searched me a few times and kept asking why I didn't stay there. Told them that it's too dangerous for me. They agreed and made sure I was sleeping in areas that were well lit like Walmart parking lots.
