In the 90s, on more than one occasion, I was saddled working with (black) diversity hires before I was savvy enough to figure out how to avoid it and still keep my job.
They always had degrees in a relevant field, sometimes even in a hard subject like engineering or computer science some from allegedly good schools. And were universally completely incompetent, unable to work independently, accept any responsibility, and vocally complained at the barest notion of accountability for their results. In talking with them, it turned out their college work consisted entirely of group projects where, I suspect, a white or asian did the actual work.
You need to actively involve yourself in hiring and team selection, and insulate yourself by filling junior positions with indians and pakis, the darker skinned the better. And you benefit that they do the shit work without complaining, the downside is understanding what the hell they are saying.
If that fails you find a sucker to pass them off to as a "mentoring opportunity" (this is how I got stung the first time).
And if that fails you maneuver to make it publicly known that the higher up who is trying to foist them on you is responsible for their presence. Then if you are even more devious you set up public but individual presentations of skills and contributions with clear, public parameters. The AA hire will out his incompetence for everyone to see but nobody will say anything. He won't get fired but nobody will say anything after that when you keep assigning him useless but time consuming jobs to keep him from getting in the way of actual work.
