I think it's worse, they are doing battlespace prep to justify packing the supreme court. Kamala's answer in the debate pretty much gave it away - since those evil republicans obviously are doing dastardly deeds, that means us noble folk must do the right thing to restore 'balance'.

It's delicious. They're in this predicament because they got both greedy and lazy. Greedy, because RBG was probably holding out on her retirement to grant Hillary a supreme court pick. How poetic it would be to allow the first woman president a chance to replace a woman justice! Lazy, because Obama couldn't be bothered to go through the political effort to fill all those federal judicial vacancies, since that would mean finding compromise with the republican senate.

Serves them right. They deserve everything they're getting, and their reflex to change the rules in response to difficulty is all too typical.
