There are good ways to use "they" as a pronoun in sci-fi - a species' culture could lack the words "he" and "she" entirely if a person's sex was viewed as a more intimate subject, and so never developed unique pronouns for the sex of somebody they aren't talking to - but this is just a copy-and-paste of the same stupid bullshit people pull today.
Sadly, the common sense approach doesn't work with these people, as they literally make a living out of "deconstructing language" and shitting all over the existing definitions of words.
Or the previously existing starwars species that had multiple personalities as an evolved trait where they them makes sense because you are usually carrying a conversation with more than one personality.
Or if you're talking about some kind of symbiont, like the "Dax" characters from ST.
