I can't even think of a good analogy that could properly describe the ridiculousness of all of this. I really think people need to get a fund together and start suing these people. The right really isn't proactive enough with this kind of stuff when we should be. Points need to be made.
The problem is that places like NYT know how to play the word salad games.

All this means in legal context is that someone associated with the Proud Boys was suspected or associated with 'white supremacy' or has a record. In actual context it could even be a reformed neo-nazi or not have any relation to anything white supremacy but had been labeled as so by another organization. This is part of the shuffling cards that is the reason that the ADL, SPLC, etc exist.
