You're right, perhaps not specifically "spontaneous," it's a bad choice of words, but the expected turnout vastly exceeded expectations from people on social media promoting it when it happened.
At least that's what I saw by watching groups talking about it who were only expecting a couple thousand.
Somehow, I doubt most of them are practicing any religion, but used it as an opportunity to get out and push back in some way.
