It's ridiculous but I don't blame them at all. It's the most-win situation for the cop.
If the cops escalate something that ends up with them having to shoot the guy, the best case scenario at that point is a long drawn out court trial where they are found not guilty but blacklisted from life by the court of social justice anyway.
Police officers have to face every day that they could not only be killed on the job but face possible death of a thousand court cases for doing the best possible thing they could in a situation. I wouldn't blame every single one of them for quitting. I'm pretty sure I'd rather do almost anything I could learn at a trade school over being a cop right now.
I keep trying to type up something more but I can't put words together right to make a clear argument and not just talk in circles. I don't disagree with that thought at all. I'm probably just projecting my irritation with the "court of social justice" onto the police situation.
