You have people in the media who truly believe that Ben Shapiro is alt-right. He's a generic conservative and an Orthodox Jew. You have media who says Trump is a fascistic alt-right dictator - and believe it. You've get the whole grouping of people who swear Trump is an evil monster of death and destruction capable of nothing good - but read one of his quotes and attribute it to Obama, and they're all like "Wow, I really love that, see why can't we have that?"
The stupid, the uneducated and the useful idiots all believe what they're saying. It doesn't matter that it doesn't match up with reality in the slightest. It doesn't matter if you show them direct evidence disproving their lunacy. They will say and write whatever they want, and people will believe and form a view based on this bullshit.
So yeah, it's essentially Stupid-Gaslighting. Then you need to toss in the actual bad faith actors who are running with it. I honestly don't see how a Democrat gets elected to the Presidency in the next decade, maybe the next two decades. No one is going to forget this - rather, it'll be an inversion of the past. In the 60s, the 70s, the 80s and to a degree the 90s you really did have to worry about random acts of violent from far-right people. It wasn't normal or regular, but it was definitely a fear people had and there are examples of it. Now, all these insane people we have today? They'll become what the far-right was in those decades. Leftist extremists trying to blow up police stations and leaving manifestos about how the police are the true evil and so on. Hopefully we're better at dealing with them.
It's Stupid-Gaslighting.
