I always use this example, but consider Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge won a Civil War. The right-wing groups (royalists basically) were forced out of the country and fled. It was only the centrists, moderates, and leftists that remained. The Khemer then slaughtered 30% of their population. Many, if not most, of the people who were executed were party loyalists and they purged their own ranks along with the rest of the country.
The average right-wing royalist was long gone. The people who stayed suffered a fate worse than death and expulsion.
If you get pushed out, only to find that people are desperate to get out with you, then you did the right thing. The left typically can't slaughter outside it's borders. So, it's better to fight, lose, and be pushed out; than it is to surrender, only to be mercilessly slaughtered and tortured to death in the inevitable purge.
