Both of the movies were allegories for the Viet Nam war, with a power fantasy tacked on at the end so they had "happy" endings.

Ripley, Vasquez, and Newt in a way, was the correct way to showcase female empowerment. Without ANY lecturing, with Vasquez giving as good as she got when they marines were bantering, with a wordless display of success though competence by Ripley at the end of both Alien and Aliens.
