30 years ago, their stuff was pretty "based", actually. Good and bad everywhere, in everything. I kind of "dropped out of the scene" by 2001, though, but I saw the way things were going. No, the Children of Gaia are NOT a bunch of gay hippies, the Furies not a bunch of lezzies, or the Get a bunch of "closeted gays". (This was the direction some writers seemed to want to take things, anyway. BUT, the Apocalypse line was ended, and I just didn't like what I saw in the first few pages of Forsaken .. whereas Apocalypse grabbed me almost immediately.) Yeah, I used to be on the official mailing list, it was fun, and Ethan Skemp was a regular participant.
But yeah, the gay political crowd was making its inroads then, it just didn't look then like it does now, in 20/20 hindsight. The thing a lot of "casuals" don't understand about Garou culture, though, is this: They ARE supposed to be a dying breed, so this definitely affects their culture ... to the point that where no one is going to care if you're an homosexual having homosexual dalliances, BUT they would definitely frown on exclusive homosexuality (in other words, you would very likely be expected to "take one for the team" to attempt to make a new Garou - or at least Kin - especially if you're male, so, yeah, anyone STing a group with a gay character might want to keep this in mind - that as "progressive" as your Glass Walker sept might be, the lack of a new generation of recruits is going to create pressure ...)
I just .. always wanted to write that down somewhere.
And oh, I remember people thinking the Seventh Generation was "unrealistic" ...
