I think the big draw for her was that she didn't seem insane and is known for being a party outsider. The Dem party got really pissed at her when she refused to endorse Hillary in 2016, for example. If the Dems did end up winning she would have been the least horrible candidate was the logic.

And I never heard them attack others based on their race, Tulsi never accused someone of "mansplaining".
