They made their money, who cares if the sales drop now?
It's not that simple. Aside from companies like this never having too much money, there's the prospect of DLC sales and future sequels. The ability for something to function as a franchise is where the real money starts to come in from and they've killed TLOU as a franchise.
It still affects sales of the company going forward.
The Last Jedi and Mass Effect 3 still made money despite a ton of controversy.
Their follow ups, not so much.
Massive returns will effect their ability to sell to the company in question in the future. Likely will be given far less room to ship them huge quantities and market through them.
This is assuming of course that the seller in question paid lump sum for all these copies and don't have a contract requiring XXX amount of sales or else Sony/ND is on the hook for it.
It isn't even that simple with a middle man.
