Hilarious, that's just straight-up the Daily Mail headline.
Also, no matter how anyone feels about ze Nazis...yeah, the Soviets were Godless communists. And plenty of people in worse situations viewed the Germans as liberators, so this doesn't surprise me.
The funniest part...this is an anti-Russian hit piece, I think. I thought it was recent at first, but it's from 2011...but there's still always someone trying to stir up enmity with Russia. The whole point of this is more legacy media Large Scale Social Deception framing to smear Russia. This isn't an 'oh that's an interesting bit of history' sort of thing.
Russia has always portrayed the war against the Germans as a historic struggle which cost 27million lives but ultimately defeated the Nazis forever.
Until now, there has been little examination of the extent of collaboration by Soviet citizens with the invaders.
While it's true that Russia loves to celebrate their part in WW2 (as does the US and many others), it's also true that there's plenty of half truths and exaggerations...and that they were dirty communists and liars. This article is still a pointed attack on Russia, though. It's interesting they keep going back and forth between "the Soviets" and "Russia." Some of that is simply that post-Soviet Russia still referenced WW2, of course, so "Russia" is accurate. But they also want to directly tie modern Russia to being Nazi collaborators.
Unsurprisingly, the research has already triggered a huge debate in Russia about attitudes to the Nazis.
I'm sure. The walls are closing in. Putin is finished this time.
But the freshly rediscovered archives reveal a far more complex situation.
In many instances, the Nazi commanders attempted a 'hearts and minds' campaign to win over civilians already oppressed by Communist dictates which included a ban on religious worship.
These guys have to be careful when smearing Russia, though. They're humanizing the Nazis, which is the one thing you must never, ever do. Well, that and Appeasement. Those are the two lessons to be learned from WW2.

Why are Nazi bad now that is not Communist propaganda?
